Overcoming Anorexia | Ola Van Zyl Positive Vitality Nutrition: HGP#18

Nutrition can be powerful and life changing. At 13 years old Ola Van Zyl put herself on a diet. Ola compared herself to photos in magazines and wanted to be skinny like the women she saw. This pressure to look a certain way led to control over her eating and soon she went from being a vegetarian to reducing her food groups and the amount of food she ate until she found herself weighing 81.5 pounds (37 kilograms) as a 5’4″ (1.65 meters) young woman in her 20’s.

Ola suffered from anorexia for 15 years until she overcame the disease but she still left with symptoms. Physically she was better but mentally she still suffered. She was eating food but wasn’t eating the right foods. This resulted in Ola feeling depressed, anxious, and moody, and feeling thus, she isolated herself from friends and family. One day she realized: Everyone else was happy and she wanted to be happy too. This epiphany inspired her to study nutrition and make some life changing habits that would ultimately transform her into a totally different person. Now she eats clean, exercises, and weighs a healthy and beautiful 125 pounds (57 kilograms).

Surfrider Foundation Cape Fear Chapter Board Member Ethan Crouch: Making Effective Change In Your Community HGP#017

The ocean is never protected, it’s always being protected.” -Surfrider Foundation

Surfrider Foundation Cape Fear Chapter former Chair and current Board Member, Ethan Crouch, joins us to talk about making effective change in your community. We also discuss taking care of our oceans, climate change, and reducing our plastics footprint.

Being environmentally conscious has been a part of Ethan’s whole life. Ethan grew up gardening, spent time in the woods, and enjoyed sailing and fishing in the Chesapeake Bay. Ethan also enjoys surfing and fishing on the Cape Fear Coast and feels fortunate to be surrounded by so many beautiful waterways (a yacht basin, a river, and the ocean). This appreciation for nature is the driving force for him to be a good steward of our natural environment. Once he found out there was a grass roots organization working hard to help protect the things on this earth he loves so much he knew he had to get involved. Ethan joined Surfrider Foundation in 2004 during undergraduate studies and has been volunteering non-stop with them ever since.

In addition to environmental topics we also discuss how you can make a difference in your local community. Whether it’s donating volunteer hours or giving monetary support, volunteers make an important difference in this world. Volunteering can make you feel good, increase your employment prospects, meet like minded people, and build a sense of community. To find your perfect fit, check out organizations like https://www.volunteermatch.org or do a quick Google search for local organizations in need.

Wake N Bake Donuts: Danny Tangredi HGP#015

Wake N Bake donuts and coffee owner, Danny Tangredi, always had a knack for making sweet stuff from a young age. From making pies and jams to entering them in the county fair; he always knew he wanted his own business. Things got real cloudy in college and one hazy day the idea for Wake N Bake donuts was born. With no prior donut making experience and sitting on the idea for more than 10 years, Danny Tangredi finally made the leap of faith to follow his dream and open a unique donut shop.

Wake N Bake is popular for their “limited edition” controversial donuts: Snoop Dogg blunt, Tide Pod donut, Election donut, School Shooting donut, 420 donut, Avett Brothers banjo, Ludacris booty, and the Willie Nelson joint.

Wake N Bake recently won the Cooking Channel’s Donut Showdown, “Wake Up Call”, grand prize of $10,000 and they have been named “Best Donuts in North Carolina” by Buzzfeed. They have also teamed up with a local brewery to create a Wake N Bake Stout and a local burger shop to create a donut burger. I think it’s safe to say these donuts get a lot of (well deserved) attention. There’s also some talk of franchising and adding more locations so be on the lookout for a Wake N Bake location coming near you.

Williams Elementary School August through June and then spends his entire summer giving back. Kevin and his awesome team of instructors offer free surf lessons to help people, who might not otherwise, spend time in the ocean. Kevin founded Ocean Cure over 10 years ago and serves a wide variety of groups: impoverished youth, gang survivors, wounded warriors and their families, people with disabilities, cancer survivors, and seniors, just to name a few. Research has already proven that spending time at the beach is good for your well being; Ocean Cure is proof that the ocean really does offer healing powers. I hope this week’s episode inspires people to help others. “Help your neighbor, help a stranger.”
