Filmmaker Matt Davis: Lifestage Films | Harvest Filmworks | Studio Sherpas HGP#32

Filmmakers love to tell stories. My guest this week was named one of the top 25 event filmmakers on the planet. His company, Lifestage Films, is most known for their destination weddings. Learn what it’s like to go behind the lens and how Matt gets to create long-lasting memories for brides, grooms, their families, and even businesses.

Matt studied International Business at Appalachian State and then went on work with a non-profit in Acapulco, Mexico. Matt’s job was to help raise money for an orphanage. He came up with an idea to make a video and that’s when his love for filmmaking was born. When he moved back to the states he started to think about what he could do to continue his passion. He soon realized a niche in the wedding industry that wasn’t being met. There were plenty of videographers that documented weddings but Matt wanted to do much more than that. He wanted to tell stories with audio and video.

Matt’s idea has grown into more than just weddings. He now gets to tell the story for businesses. Matt is a storyteller, not a commercial maker. His sister company, Harvest Filmworks, creates 2-3 minute brand identity films for corporations and businesses. Known for their aerial work with HD quadcopters, they had the pleasure of filming the largest home in the United States: The Biltmore Estate. One of my favorite and compelling films by Harvest Filmworks is with Hometown Hires, a company using a unique initiative to hire skilled people that just need a second chance.

Matt and his buddy Ryan created Studio Sherpas to appeal to entrepreneurs. A sherpa is a guide that helps others. Their webinars and online training aim to help business owners increase profits without losing their creativity. With amazing guests and relevant topics, the Studio Sherpas podcast will give you actionable items you can actually do in your business – and in your life – to help you get the most out of it all. Check out the podcast on iTunes and Spotify. Their webinars and online training can be done anytime and anywhere, in the comfort of your home, office, or even hotel room.

Resiliency and Leadership in the Workplace | Matt Domogala: EnergiZing HGP#31

Resilience is the most needed, the least known, and most ignored skill on planet earth.” -Matt Domogala

Chances are, sooner or later people will become sick of their job or hit a wall in their career. Chances are, at some point in our lives or career, we will experience the feeling of being stuck, unmotivated, unappreciated, or under-valued in the workplace. Matt believes that employees need to be treated as human beings, not “human doings”. Building relationships between employees and management build better leaders, employees, and results. Matt says managers are result oriented and want to see hard results. Matt believes you can’t get “hard results” without “soft skills”, like encouragement and empathy.

Matt’s company, EnergiZing, is building better relationships and energy in the workplace. The biggest influence on workplace culture is the way employees communicate. Better communication produces better results. Happy people produce results. Matt Domogala is an “Edutainer”, business mentor, trainer, coach, and entrepreneur who helps organizations build resiliance by helping their employees learn how to sustain the pressure and demands without compromising results. Matt has been sharing his knowledge and experience for over 15 years, hosting conferences, workshops and lectures in the U.S. and Europe.

Matt’s own weaknesses and eagerness to overcome them inspired him to create the concept of “Energizing us”. Initially it was difficult for him to deal with his flaws. He felt this overwhelming lack of energy and that prevented him from materializing his dreams and goals. As he was researching and reading to help himself out, he ended up building the concept of “Energizing us”.

At his workshops he shows participants how to build energy and how to increase resilience in order to handle professional and life hardships. Matt has inspired many participants and has coached many companies including Metlife, Adidas, and many others. He has also performed at conferences organized by Wharton Business School, Columbia, and Yale Universities. He passionately applies the newest discoveries in psychology and human brain studies to business by presenting his concept of life and work expressed in a simple phrase: “Energizing us.”

Bodysurfing Guru Don McCredie | DMC Fins HGP#30

Bodysurfing is one of the oldest water sports where surfers ride waves with just their body. Bodysurfers ride with the wave, on their belly, versus on top of it. Nowadays the sport is quickly gaining popularity with plenty of competitions popping up all across the globe. The most beautiful part is you don’t need any special training – anyone can do it! Be warned however, it may make you feel like a kid again.

After a bodysurfing injury left Don with multiple surgeries he soon began to focus his energies elsewhere. Don was a professional fire-fighter and an active member of his local Surf Life Saving Club at Coogee Beach, NSW, Australia; the beach was where he spent his youth. He was also a strong swimmer who competed in many different sporting events. In 1983 he won the title of the World Surf Life Saving Body-surfing Champion. Through these endeavors and after several trips to Hawaii in the mid 80’s, while competing regularly in bodysurfing contests, he became interested in water flow and fluid dynamics, thus allowing the DMC Fins idea to take root.

Don’s idea was to design and create a type of swim propulsion fin (or flipper) that would revolutionize his chosen sport. The Hydro Finz were born. The design of the fin was unique, as it’s “V Rail” design gave it the edge on the competition and proved functional in wave riding, particularly deep hollow tubes. The V Rail acted like small surfboard fins, only with 8 edges to add traction, instead of 2 to 3 fins found on surfboards.

Don travelled extensively to secure distributors for his one and only product and due to its unique patented qualities and performance, DMC gained sales and recognition worldwide. Since then over a million pairs of Hydro fin products have been sold in over 20 countries. DMC now has several different models of fins and offers fins for swimmers of the pool and ocean.

Don’s bodysurfing and swimming knowledge combined, plus product innovation, have created a line of products that suit the beginner to the serious aquatic athlete. In recent years Don won another World Championship for Bodysurfing in his ‘Masters’ age group and qualified as a swim coach.

I don’t think you have to be someone who can swim like an olympic swimmer,” she said. “You just have to be able to see when the waves are coming, when is the right time to take off, what’s the right time to make that commitment and the right time to get out and that’s something you can learn with experience and there’s lots of people willing to help you learn that.” –Meredith Rose, Three time World Bodysurfing Champion

Mama Maisha: Women’s Health Advocacy | Reta Graham, MD HGP#29

Mama Maisha is an Asheville, NC-based non-profit making motherhood safer for the Luo tribe in the Mara region of Tanzania. Mama Maisha, or “Mother Life” in Swahili, was founded to provide effective, sustainable care in challenging, resource-limited circumstances. The number one cause of death of a mother in subsaharan Africa is post-partum bleeding. Pregnancy complication-related deaths are rare in developed countries, but in Tanzania, one mother dies every single hour.

Mama Maisha is a safe motherhood intervention project founded by two doctors, Reta Graham, MD (OBGYN), and Jeff Graham, MD (General Practitioner), in affiliation with local and regional non-governmental services. Mama Maisha works at the village level, providing essential prenatal care and delivery services, as well as education and resources to empower women to make wise decisions regarding family planning, healthy pregnancies, and a safe delivery for every child.

Women in rural Tanzania have poor access to health care services, especially maternal health care. A limited number of health facilities paired with an undeveloped road system makes it difficult for pregnant women to access quality prenatal care and delivery services. Community-based maternal and reproductive health advocates are being trained to provide support to mothers in a culture where women aren’t often comfortable making choices regarding their own health and safety.

Dr. Reta Graham has been an OBGYN doctor for 15 years and currently works at MAHEC. We spend a little time talking about the U.S. healthcare system, what a comprehensive healthcare system might look like, and reproductive health access for women. Learn how Mama Maisha is making a difference in the lives of women in Tanzania and how access to healthcare is one of the most important topics for women across the globe.
