Running + The Wired Athlete | Peyton Chitty HGP#28

Running wasn’t always something Peyton was passionate about. In fact, he never ran a day in his life until 2012. Remnants of a former car accident left him with degenerated discs in his neck and required him to have a discectomy of his cervical spine. During his recovery, one single wrong move could leave him paralyzed. Peyton refused to let the victim stance mentality win. He resorted to walking for exercise. Walking soon led to running and running soon led to racing. 5k races led to half marathons. Half marathons led to marathons.

During his second marathon, Peyton started feeling nauseous around mile 20 and did a walk/run for the last 6 miles. He chalked off his disappointment to dehydration and rookie mistakes. Weeks later Peyton was running a 10k in Oak Island where he fell to the ground just 200 meters from the finish. Peyton was rushed to the hospital and after many tests and doctor visits he was diagnosed with Bradycardia and type II Atrioventricular Block, which required him to get a pacemaker.

Inspired by other adaptive athletes like Buddy 1 Leg (skateboarder/snowboarder), Misty Diaz (Spartan athlete), and Mikey Da Temple (surfer), Peyton refused to be defined by his circumstance. He hired a running coach, started training for marathons, and 11 months post pacemaker surgery he PR’d his first marathon. 2 years to the day of getting his pacemaker he qualified for Boston. Peyton is still running wild and free today, even during the eye of a hurricane.

Peyton talks about his set backs, injuries, and life as a “wired athlete”. He now aims to inspire and motivate others to work to the best of their ability with what they have. He is a high school counselor and expects the same of his students. Accountability is a huge factor for him. He quotes, there are plenty of days I don’t want to run but there’s never a day I wish I hadn’t.

Overcoming Addiction: Mike Furino | Drift Dreams HGP#26

Addiction can be a struggle and a hard thing to overcome, especially without any help. Mike Furino struggled with addiction for 20 years. Like many people, he went down the wrong path, got with the wrong crowd, and found himself smoking marijuana at 13 years old. Mike then moved on to selling marijuana and cocaine and eventually got expelled from every high school in Duvall County, Florida. He moved out of his parents house when he was 17 and ironically was able to afford a house in same neighborhood as his parents. Mike then started doing crystal meth and taking pills (Xanax) to help him sleep. Once he reached his early 20’s he transitioned into drinking hard alcohol and “leveled himself out” with cocaine. As I learned in this podcast, every addict hits rock bottom at some point but Mike’s first rock bottom wasn’t enough. Now a functioning alcoholic working a really good paying job, Mike was still drinking himself into oblivion every day. He ultimately wrecked a food truck, found himself jobless and at rock, rock bottom.

4.5 years sober he is now turning passion into purpose. Mike got sober without any help or 12 step program. He believes many people who are struggling just need someone to believe in them. Mike has made it a priority to give back to others by helping anyone struggling with addiction. He encourages anyone who may be suffering from an addiction to reach out to him.

CBD + Hemp: Oak City Cannabis | Tim McChesney HGP #24

Oak City Cannabis owner Tim McChesney is one of the few farmers participating in the Industrial Hemp Pilot Program. Tim has a small, 3 acre farm of about 2,000 plants. His farm focuses more on a high quality plant resulting in high quality CBD products.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Hemp: Plants, Seeds, Strains, and Content
  • Farm Life: Growing Hemp, NC Pilot Program
  • CBD: Benefits and Uses
  • CBD Products: Flower, Oil, Edibles, and Topicals.

Industrial hemp is the same species as marijuana (Cannabis sativa) but the two crops are distinguishable by their tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content. Marijuana contains both THC and CBD, and these compounds have different effects. Hemp is limited to 0.2% to 0.3% THC. THC levels in marijuana are generally 3%-15%. The least processed form of the cannabis plant, known as hemp, contains most of the CBD used medicinally. Unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive. This means that it does not change the state of mind of the person who uses it. However, CBD does appear to produce significant changes in the body, and some research suggests that it has medical benefits, including pain relief.

Mitch McConnell (R) introduced Farm Bill 2018 on April 12, 2018, which could fully legalize industrial hemp. The Hemp Farming Act is a proposed law to remove hemp from Schedule I controlled substances list and making it an ordinary agricultural commodity. Now, after four years of research Congress is expected in September to make the crop legal for Americans to grow for the first time in nearly 50 years.

Montessori education has been around for hundreds of years and is becoming increasingly popular in the U.S.. In this conversation with long time Montessorian, Patty Barshay, we explore Montessori Philosophy and Methodology. We breakdown each topic into Approach, Classroom, and Age Planes. Montessori schools are exceptionally successful, so why aren’t there more of them? Patty currently spends her time volunteering at the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum where she is still using her Montessori education. He has given over 2,000 rides in 8 1/2 months and holds a 5-star rating (1,057 reviews). We share thoughts on the future of ride share and what can be done to make ride share better.
